A few favorite places:
Exceptionally talented director:
Her sister, and equally as exceptionally talented photographer, here: (I am so moved):
Melinda Dahl (she did all of the photo work for Alison Sudol (A Fine Frenzy)
I was partially joking when I told my husband they would do our first music video given we ever do a first show….or record a first cd of all these songs…….they have such a depth in capturing the music of the artists they work with in film and photo medium. I’m so impressed!
I have been listening to A Fine Frenzy (the brilliance of Alison Sudol) currently and am very enthralled. It could also be that the photography that typically accompanies her is beautiful…..and the fact that she uses piano as the main attraction….new, fresh and amazing. Can be heard on projectplaylist under ’search for music.’
Since early childhood, my life has been filled with music of all kinds. If it was well done and just amazing, we had it. I had the great opportunity to have my ears tuned right and was born with a passion for it. Since being introduced to the traditional music of many countries in college, (Such as France, Spain, Italy, Argentina, Brazil, Sudan, Egypt, Israel, Turkey…the list goes on and on) and being able to experience incorporating those sounds into my own composition…I’ve been on the hunt for amazing world fusion music from those that do it well.
A few that I love (almost daily) -
I can’t get enough of the Gotan Project. Their music is reminiscent of both traditional tango and folkloric music of Argentina – reminds me of watching some traditional tango in South America while enjoying tapas in Spain, at the same time. (anything that gives me the urge to dance, well, that’s good music.)
Yasmin Levy – Crystal clean, gorgeous voice. She also sings in traditional Ladino, which is an archaic form of Spanish. Being of Judeo-Spanish blood, she is one of the very few musicians today who have kept the traditional music of this mixed culture, and the Ladino language alive. In fact, Ladino is considered a dying language. That thought, along with her amazingly gorgeous, rich and clear voice, almost leaves me with a sort of sorrowful longing when I listen to her. Wonderful music.
Another for the day – Paris Combo. Very French, very eclectic – if you feel like visiting a Parisian cafe one day, pop this album in.
Yann Tiersen. I have no words for his music – its all over the place, but amazing. (What I’ve been listening to right now – Le Phare and his collaboration album with Shannon Wright). His film scores – I close my eyes, take a deep breath and soak them up. (Of great merit – Goodbye, Lenin! and Amelie…also both excellent movies, I might add.)
